Philip Paul in Concert at SCPA
The Mayerson Foundation’s Artistic Excellence Program at the School for Creative & Performing Arts (SCPA) teaches students how to play a French horn, how to tell in what time signature a piece of music is written, and how to dance en pointe or demi pointe. But within each lesson is an education about perseverance, resilience, and courage. Philip Paul is the legendary session drummer from historic King Records. Many of us met Philip and his wife, Juanita, in 2002 when he recorded, “Hideaway”, with guitarist Peter Frampton for the “Hidden Treasures” compilation CD. Philip performed on over 350 records (that’s what we used to call CD’s) in a wide variety of blues, R&B, early rock & roll and jazz genres. Few drummers could “fill the pocket” like Philip Paul. His longevity in the business (he turns 87 this year) is a testament to the dignity and ethics for which he’s known almost as well as his unwavering beat.
Philip will lead a 3-day workshop for the jazz students at SCPA culminating in a side-by-side concert with students on Friday, March 9. In April, Philip will perform at the induction ceremonies for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame where there’s talk he’ll be inducted himself one day.
Philip Paul will be signing the poster below at a post-concert reception on March 9
