The Mayerson Service-Learning Program

The Mayerson Service-Learning Program (MSLP) began in 1992 to support the involvement of high school students, their teachers and their schools in strengthening our community through volunteer service. Through the MSLP, The Foundation provides funding, training and technical support to local high schools through a consultative process. The MSLP responds to requests for assistance from schools to implement or improve the fulfillment of mandatory service hours, to integrate service in the academic curriculum, to enhance community service with preparation or reflection activities, and to recognize student achievement in the areas of service and volunteerism. Current program offerings include:

• One-on-one consultation with Program Director, Steve Elliott.
• In-service training for small to large groups of faculty and staff.
• Annual Service Coordinators Workshop – an opportunity to learn and to network with the coordinators of high school service programs from over 50 local schools.
• Operating grants of up to $1,000 to help support service programs
• Annual Student Service Leadership Workshop and Service Fair – up to eight students from each school attend a day-long workshop with their service coordinators. Local service agencies present their volunteer service opportunities.
• Artist-in-Reflection Program – professional resident artists lead the creation of student art work in response to students’ service experience. Products range from poems to city block-long murals.
• Mayerson Book Award – provides seminal texts in the service literature to be awarded by schools to an outstanding student in recognition of his/her contributions to service.
• Summer Service Residency Program – students from diverse local high schools live in a local college dormitory during the summer and work full-time in social service agencies.
• Urban Plunges – day-long immersion programs that combine service in the inner-city with innovative reflection activities. Appropriate for entire faculties, student groups or entire grades.
• Student Philanthropy – students learn to be grant makers as another way of asking “What are the opportunities to serve my community?”
