Activation Funding Pilot – Learning With Partners

In March of 2019, The Manuel D. & Rhoda Mayerson Foundation launched Activation Funding: a unique, trust-based funding opportunity for nonprofits that:

  • Involve clients (individuals, communities, or neighborhoods) in determining their aspirations and plans for how to achieve them;
  • Take special effort to identify existing strengths in individuals and the community and deliberately using those strengths towards achieving goals;
  • Bring clients to a point of greater self-sufficiency to address ongoing difficulties without needing continuous help from the organization;
  • Help clients make meaningful connections that enhance self-sufficiency, and impart meaningful belonging.

The Manuel D. & Rhoda Mayerson Foundation goes “beyond the check.”  Foundation staff and trustees are working alongside nonprofit grantees in ways that make sense to drive progress.  For example, working with Ohio Innocence Project to help build systems and well-being programs for individuals who have been wrongfully incarcerated.  Or, developing a strengths-based advancement program to support low-income individuals in obtaining and advancing employment options through Cincinnati Works.
